In-person and Virtual VITA Services

Our team of certified and vetted volunteers is ready to assist you with your tax filing needs. In-person services can assist with returns back to 2020. The United Way of Racine County VITA program serves Wisconsin taxpayers with a household income of $69,000 or less. We are unable to prepare or file returns for taxpayers who file as Married Filing Separate, have rental income (landlords), or businesses with inventory or employees. If your return is out of scope for in-person services, please visit our DIY options for free software to file your own return using our free TaxSlayer software or IRS Direct File.

Out of Scope returns:

We cannot file returns with the following items due to it being out of scope for the VITA program:

  • Married Filing Separate returns (filing separately from your spouse)
  • Returns with landlord/rental income
  • Returns with buying or selling of cyber currency
  • Business returns (with employees, use of home as an office, inventory/stock). We can prepare simple self-employment returns.
  • State returns other than Wisconsin and non-resident Illinois returns

Items that are out of scope are not limited to the list above. These are just the most common items we see. We will interview you and discuss your tax situation to determine if you are within the scope of our program.

Appointments are no longer available.

Our team will be taking a short break and then we will begin to serve clients again in May. To schedule an after-season appointment. Please call 262-898-2248 after April 24.

After-season appointments are available to help with:

- Free federal and state filing for current and past tax years

- Wisconsin Homestead

- Amended returns

- IRS letters

Virtual VITA services are still available! Returns are not guaranteed to be completed before April 15.

Send your tax information to our Racine County VITA program and we'll do the work for you.

Virtual VITA utilizes GetYourRefund to collect and securely store taxpayer information and documents. Taxpayers will create an account and answer a series of questions. The information will be reviewed, and the taxpayer will be contacted by a member of our local virtual VITA team to review the information before the volunteer prepares the tax return. The process can take up to a week to complete once we receive all the necessary documents.

  • 100% virtual for your convenience
  • Safe and secure platform to send personal information and tax documents to your tax team
  • Returns prepared by our local team of certified VITA volunteers
  • Easy to submit from a smart phone, tablet or computer
  • For taxpayers with an income of $69,000 or less
  • VITA cannot prepare returns that are Married Filing Separate or contain rental or farm income
  • Our program only prepares state returns for Wisconsin, click here if you have a tax return for a state other than Wisconsin.
  • Preparation available for current tax year and three previous years
  • You will be required to interview by phone with a volunteer tax preparer
  • Return will be reviewed over the phone and electronically signed before filing
