United is the Way: Civic Engagement Builds a Healthier Racine County

When people connect and participate, everyone benefits

Nov. 24, 2025 (Racine, WI) — Across the country, communities are rediscovering a powerful truth: When people come together to participate, volunteer, and lead, everyone benefits. Volunteerism isn’t just good for the community, it’s good for individual health, happiness, and connection.

United Way of Racine County believes that a strong community starts with involved citizens. When residents invest their time, energy, and skills in their neighborhoods, they help build trust, resilience, and a shared sense of purpose.

“Communities grow stronger when neighbors come together,” said Ali Haigh, President and CEO of United Way of Racine County. “Volunteering isn’t just an act of service; it’s an act of connection. It helps us all live healthier, more fulfilling lives.”

UWRC offers several ways for residents to get involved and make a meaningful difference:

  • Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA): Help local families achieve financial stability by assisting with free tax preparation. Volunteers receive training and support, so no prior experience is needed.
  • Volunteer Advisory Teams (VATs): Join fellow community members to help guide UWRC’s funding decisions, ensuring that local investments create measurable impact.
  • United Horizons Nonprofit Board Training Program: Develop the knowledge and leadership skills to serve effectively on nonprofit boards and shape the future of local organizations.

Research consistently shows that civic participation, whether through volunteering, mentoring, or serving on a board, strengthens both community well-being and personal fulfillment. People who engage are more connected, more resilient, and more likely to see positive change in their neighborhoods.

“Racine County’s future depends on how we show up for each other,” Haigh said. “When we give our time, lend our expertise, and build relationships, we strengthen the very fabric of our community.”    To learn more or get involved, visit UnitedWayRacine.org/volunteer
