United Way Surprises 95th Anniversary Sweepstakes Winner

June 5, 2018 — United Way of Racine County surprised one lucky donor Monday with a $9,500 check. The sweepstakes prize was part of United Way’s 95th anniversary celebration, which wrapped up in January with the announcement of their annual fundraising campaign total.

A group of United Way staff members and a representative from Andis Company delivered the prize to Gabriel Martin, an employee at Great Northern Corporation in Racine. Martin was surprised with an oversized check and balloons during a short staff meeting Monday afternoon in front of his co-workers.

“The sweepstakes is just another example of how we’re trying to engage donors in new ways. We’re thankful that a great supporter like the Andis Foundation helped to make it possible,” said Rodney Prunty, United Way of Racine County president. “We’re also happy that the winner just happened to work for another great supporter of ours.”

Martin, who said he donates regularly through is his workplace campaign at Great Northern, was excited by the opportunity to at least have a chance at winning the $9,500 prize, but it wasn’t the main reason he donated to the annual campaign.

“It’s more of a plus, but I’d donate either way. I like the fact that I’m helping the community,” Martin said.

More than 1,000 donors qualified for the sweepstakes by donating to the 2017 annual campaign. First-time donors who donated $95 and existing donors who increased their donations by 9.5 percent qualified.

Prunty was joined by Jody Rigby of Andis Company. The Andis Foundation donated the $9,500 in honor of the company’s 95th anniversary in 2017.

“On behalf of the foundation and the company, we are very excited that Gabe is our winner. He is definitely a true example of what a United Way donor should be and what it means to give back to this community,” Rigby said.

United Way will again hold a sweepstakes for the upcoming fundraising campaign that kicks off in September. John Batten, CEO of Twin Disc, announced that the company would sponsor this year’s sweepstakes in honor of Twin Disc’s 100th anniversary. The prize this year will be $10,000.

“As a longtime supporter of United Way, I’m excited to celebrate this milestone and express our appreciation for our employees, customers, and the communities where we work and live,” Batten said.
