Community discusses focus of reading program

On the morning of December 1, United Way of Racine County convened a diverse group of community members to fully assess the current situation, gain insight on the perspectives from a variety of stakeholders, do a scan of current programs focused on similar outcomes, and start to define desired outcomes.

Schools of Hope is a proven model focused on achieving measurable gains in third-grade reading proficiency. It was started in Dane County in 1995, and the program effectively reduced the racial achievement gap from 21 percent to 2 percent by 2005. With the success in Dane County, the Schools of Hope model spread across the country and a number of United Ways have partnered with their local school districts and community partners to address similar concerns about third grade reading proficiency rates in their own regions. United Way of Racine County is currently in the exploratory phases of launching the initiative within Racine Unified School District.
