Education, income and health are the building blocks for a good life. Education is essential to getting and keeping a job with a livable wage and health benefits. An income adequate to pay for today’s necessities and save for the future provides families some sense of financial stability. Access to quality health care keeps children on track in school and adults productive at work. United Way’s mission of “improving lives and creating lasting community change in partnership with others” is accomplished not just by funding programs, but by initiating and facilitating systems-wide projects around education, income and health.
United Way of Racine County has taken on the leadership role for several community-wide initiatives that help advance the common good by ensuring Racine County residents with opportunities for a better life. Our most notable initiative has been the creation of HALO, the Homeless Assistance Leadership Organization that opened its doors in 2004 to provide year-round shelter for men, women and children, while also addressing the root causes of chronic homelessness.
Currently, United Way of Racine County is leading the way in two local initiatives: Out of School Time Opportunities (after school programming for educational success) and Advancing Family Assets: Financial Stability and Family Success.
